Mother’s Day is just around the corner. You know what that means? Time for some easy Mother’s Day Recipes. These groupings of recipes are all brunch or breakfast recipes.
Today in this post I am making cinnamon rolls. But not just any cinnamon rolls. These cinnamon rolls will be shaped like flowers. A lot easier than it sounds. Let me show you.
Easy Mother’s Day Recipes : The Process
To get yourself to the point of forming the cinnamon rolls, check out my bread baking 101 post. But this sections will take it from there.
First, get out your toppings. This includes your softened, not melted butter. Melted butter just runs off your dough and becomes a big mess. And then a mixture of brown sugar and cinnamon.
Now after the first rise, punch the dough down and turn it out onto a lightly floured surface. Now just simply using a rolling pin roll the dough out to about 1/4 of an inch thick.
Now, take a 2 inch cookie cutter and punch out circles, 4 for each roll. It’s ok if they aren’t perfectly round. If you think about it, a flower peddle isn’t either. And besides, you are on the Clumsy Cakes Food Blog. This is a safe place to be imperfect.
Now, just starting from the first circle in the row( Up at the top in the picture on the right). Start rolling. Now fan out the peddles.
It’s kind of hard because the filling can keep the dough from sticking to itself but as best you can, you want to gather the dough at the end and seal it all together. You can use the bottom of your baking dish or you work surface to make it flat by pressing the roll down on the surface lightly.
As for a dish to serve these easy Mother’s Day recipes in, I went through a few options. I first thought of doing it in a traditional baking pan. But in my head I envisioned these in a bouquet formation, so I wanted something circular. So, I settled on a pie plate. I also thought about using a bundt pan.
At this point in the recipe, and this is totally your choice. I covered this and stuck it in the fridge overnight. That way in the morning, all I have to do is let it rise a second time and bake.
Mother's Day Cinnamon Roll Roses
A Mother's Day twist on a classic cinnamon roll recipe. Each roll is shaped like a rose.
Ingredients
The Dough
- 3 Cups of AP Flour
- 3 TBSP's of Granulated Sugar
- 2 Teaspoons of Salt
- 2 Eggs
- 1/2 of a Cup of Milk
- 6 Tablespoons of Unsalted Butter (melted)
- 1/4 of a Cup of Warm Water (100-110•F)
- 1 1/4 Tsp of Active Dry Yeast
The Icing
- 1 Cup of Confectioners Sugar
- 2 Tbsp of Milk ( Just enough to thin the icing out to the consistency of honey)
- 1 Tsp of Vanilla Extract.
Filling
- 3/4 of a Cup of Brown Sugar
- 2 Tsps of Cinnamon
- 1/2 Stick of Butter (Softened)
Instructions
The Dough
- Activate the yeast by adding it to the warm water in a small bowl. Let that sit for 5 minutes to activate. You will know it's ready when it is bubbly and foamy and smells like bread.
- In a large bowl sift together the flour, salt and salt. Set aside.
- Whisk in the wet ingrediants, the milk, melted butter, and eggs and the activated yeast until well combined.
- Add in 2 1/2 cups of the sifted flour, and place the bowl on your stand mixer fitted with a dough hook attachment.
- Knead on medium low speed until the dough comes together.
- When the dough comes together, add in the remaining 1/2 cup of flour and salt.
- Keep the mixer on medium low speed until the flour is incorperated and then continue to knead until smooth and the dough is stretchy enough that you can gently stretch a ball of dough out thin enough that light passes through. About 5-10 minutes. The dough should be very and soft.
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Gently knead the dough into a ball and then place it in a lightly oiled bowl.
- Place in a warm dry place to rise until doubled in size. This should take 1 hour to an hour and a half..
- Punch the dough down and turn it out onto a lightly floured surface again.
- Roll the dough out to 1/4 of an inch thick.
- Cut out 2 Inch circles from the dough. You want 4 for each cinnamon bun. You can reroll the excess if needed.
- Combine the cinnamon and the brown sugar into a small bowl. This is the filling.
- Brush the circle with softened butter.
- Spinkle the circles with the filling.
- Line up for circles in a line of four with the filling sides facing up.
- Starting from one end of the line, Roll up the circles.
- Fan out the peddles.
- You can cover the buns and do this next step in the morning if you like: Cover the rolls and let them rise for another 45 minutes until doubled in size again.
- Bake for 30-45 minutes or until golden brown.
Assembly
Icing
- Place the confectioners sugar in a medium sized bowl.
- Add milk and whisk until you get a honey like consistancy.
- Drizzle the icing on each cinnamon roll with a spoon.
Notes
If you chose to let the buns risse again and bake the next morning, the dough will be cold from the fridge. Preheat the oven to 200•, once at temperture shut it off and let it cool down a little. Then place the buns in to rise.
