Caramel apples are one of my favorite fall recipes but let’s be honest, they are really mess and difficult to eat. But caramel apple slices are much simpler. And more pieces means more toppings which is always a plus.
Toppings of Caramel Apple Slices
For these caramel apple slices, I used many different toppings. You can use many different toppings or all the same for all the slices but here are the ones that I used for some ideas and inspiration.
Tips To Get The Caramel To Stick To The Apple
- Keep your caramel at about 190•F for dipping. If it cools down too much it will become too thick and will just slide right off the apple slice.
- Store bought apples can come with an almost waxy outside and this can make your caramel not want to stick to the apple. It’s important to rinse your apples off and dry them with a paper towel to get that coating off.
- There is a lot of debate on whether the caramel will stick better to a chilled apple or a room temperature apple. I tried both and I find it sticks better to room temperature apples.
Trying this recipe once will show you why this is one of my favorite fall recipes. Caramel apples are that perfect balance of sweet and tart flavors and are so easy to make once you get the right technique. Caramel Apple Slices
Green apple slices dipped in caramel and then rolled in various toppings.
Ingredients
- 2 Granny Smith Apples
- 22 oz of soft caramel candies
- 2 Tbsp of Heavy Cream
- 2 Cups of ground up topping of your choice.
- Semi Sweet Chocolate Chips
Instructions
Prep
- Break each topping up into small morsels in it's own seporite bowl. ( I am using multiple but you can use as many or as little as you want.)
- Rinse each apple in water and dry with a paper towel. Using an apple slicer, slice 1 apple into 8. Cut the other apple the same way. Soak the apples in a mixture of room temperture water and 2 tbsp of lemon juice to prevent them from going brown while you melt you caramel.
- Prepare a baking sheet by laying it with parchment paper. Set aside.
Melt Caramel
- Add the caramel candies and 2 Tbsp of heavy cream to a medium size pot and turn on to medium low heat.
- Stir until melted and at 190•. About 3 minutes.
Decorate
- Dip half of each apple slice in the caramel. Tap off the excess and set them on the tray.
- Dip each into desired topping.
- Leave to set in fridge for another 1-2 hours.
- Melt the chocolate and place it into a small squeeze bottle. Drizzle a small amount of chocolate over each peice. Let dry for 5-10 minutes.
